Mentors thoughts

I spoke with Lee Cadieux earlier and I gave him some ideas about where I want my project to go. He also helped me out with some things aswell. He said to me that my project is about sending a message to Chinese Students about life at Ulster. Life here is radically different to life over in Shanghai for example for Students. Over in Northern Ireland we can get in our car and drive to a beach on the coast within minutes, over in china thats an impossible thing to do. This is just one example of the differences in Cultures between the two countries. Another really important is the teaching methods between China and Ulster. Chinese Universities are generally stricter an less connectivity between Students and Lecturers. I myself use facebook to talk to my lecturers and interact with them an they give me feedback on projects that Im doing so that aspect alone will make for a good selling point for the University of Ulster. I was giving another way of looking at things, break the video into two parts, the first part being what we have in common with the Chinese students, it maybe more than we think? The second part being what Chinese Students can gain from our culture eg St.Patricks Day, going to the beach, connecting with Lecturers, going to the pub for a pint. I want to include these to my film project.

Week 6 meeting

Today I had a meeting with Paul Moore and Lee Cadieux and I got some great feedback for my project. Paul suggested that I read a book called Youtube : Online Video and Participation Culture made by..........  I also was given some good constructive critisism about my project Ideas from both lecturers. I have decided to not add much dialogue to my piece as it will possibly confuse my chinese target market. I came up with an idea to create a film based on a facebook conversation between two chinese students. I was going to add chinese symbols as a subtitle effect so that Chinese Students can understand. I also will be focusing my movie in Magee Campus and the City of Derry. I feel I can make a strong video just including Derry.

This is some more work I tried out with my camcorder. Its the Foyle Bridge only I focused on it better this time and quickened the footage up. Its experimental work so Im going to try out other techniques but I like these ideas so far...

This is my stop motion I made of me going down steps in the University. It didnt turn out that good. I tried to create an effect that was similar to my "pillars" work I created in second year but it wasnt as effective.

This is a video I took of the foyle bridge but I couldnt get it to focus properly and decided to film it blurry, I think it looks quite cool and it could be brought into my film as a title intro or something similar.

I have created some Experimental work for my film. I tried to make a Time Lapse of a road in Derry. I done this to create a busy effect within the City of Derry. It turned out quite good and it could be developed further.

experimental ideas

This week I will begin experimenting with my video ideas, I’m going to try a few techniques to get an idea of what’s working for my video. First off I’m going to make a stop motion of a student going around university campuses. I have an idea to make a similar piece of work that I done in second year that was turned out really well but I didn’t use it in my submission. It was a stop motion of me moving up pillars in a shopping centre, I want to create something similar for this project in hope of creating an effective original piece of design work for my final project.
